For some, it may be an interesting building which they have passed every day on the way to the office.  For others it will hold a very special significance. But magnificent it is in every respect. Yet the design and building of it was by no means a given. Development began in 1918 but the foundation stone was not laid until 1927.  Why? What happened?  It’s quite a story.

The Shrine is a Melbourne icon and the names associated with its development still speak to us down the ages – Sir John Monash, war hero, a great proponent and fundraiser; Lord Somers [Governor of Victoria] who laid the foundation stone; and HRH the Duke of Gloucester [son of the King and younger brother of two future Kings] who opened it in 1934 before a crowd of 300,000 [when Melbourne only boasted a population of 1 million!] But there is so much more to the story. Meet at the Visitors Centre and enjoy a fully guided private tour.
